A little history
For centuries, Nazaré lived almost entirely from fishing. The women, in their seven-skirt dress, waited on the dunes for the boats to return. Today that heritage lives alongside the worldwide phenomenon of the Nazaré Canyon's giant waves, making the village a rare meeting of tradition and records.

Surfers from around the world take on the Nazaré Canyon at Praia do Norte.

A centuries-old procession and popular festival in Sítio da Nazaré.
The biggest wave ever surfed (26 metres) was ridden here, at Praia do Norte.
The Sítio quarter sits 110 metres above the beach, linked by a century-old funicular.
The name 'Nazaré' dates back to an image of Our Lady brought from Nazareth in Palestine.
The seven-skirt dress symbolised, among other readings, the seven days of the week.
